Abstract: This article analyzes the duration of the unemployment of youth in Spain. Empirical results, using data from ECVT (1985) indicase that it is important to distinguish between men and women and between two important transitions.- that from unemployment to employment and that from unemployment to no participation. First, unemployment insurance increases its length mainly because it delays women''''s exit from the labor market and it delays job acquisition for men. Secondly, the family situation is an important factor in the length of time a person remains unemployed, Men who are heads of famllies are quicker in finding jobs than those who aren''''t and single women find jobs faster than married women. Having university-level training substantially increases the chances of finding a Job among young women. Both for men and for women, those who are unemployed because of termination of their work contracts are faster in leaving the labor market than those who have been dismissed.
