Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to offer a brief survey on the main theoretical contributions addressed in order to account for the structure, direction and volume of international trade. Broadly speaking, we will examine two main groups of theories: firstly, those theories based on the assumption of perfect competition, which would explain international trade according to the different factor endowments across countries and different factor intensities among goods; and, secondly, the more recent imperfect competition theories, which would better explain the exchange of similar products among countries with similar factor endowments.
