Abstract:
This article analyzes the fishing of the anchovy (engraulis encrassicholus) in the Gulf of Biscay (Division VII), which, together with the tunny fish (chunnus alalunga) constitutes the principal source of income for the low seas fleet of the Basque Country and of most of the fishing ports on the Cantabrian coast. Emphasis is put on the characteristics of the natural resource, the evolution of catches, the various fleets that intervene in fishing and the existing framework that regulate this activity. The paper ends with a diagnosis of the situation of this fishery and of their future perspectives.
