Abstract:
The reform of public pension schemes in Latin America has been geared towards replacing a system of defined benefits with a system of defined contributions. Following a brief analysis of the problems traditionally faced by the systems of distribution in Latin American Countries, aggravated recently by the process of economic internationalisation, the article examines the main characteristics of the new systems introduced. It concludes with commentaries on some of the results beginning to be seen in terms of scope of protection, management costs, and cost effectiveness of contributions, taking the Chilean example as a reference point.
