Abstract:
The objective of this work is to contribute to the empirical study of the occupational situation of the Spanish youth in its double facet of activity and occupation. Although it is easy to find studies which analyse the probability of occupation of young people based on univariate estimate techniques, bivariate techniques that take into account the joint decisions that are taken in real life are less frequent. In this work the authors start from the premise that the probability that a youth is employed at present is the final result of two sequentials. These sequentials are that he or she has decided, in the first place, to take part in the labour market and then he or she has or has not accepted a job. These decisions should be jointly considered, which means employing bivariate estimate techniques, otherwise the results obtained could turn out to be biased. The statistical source used for this purpose is the "Encuesta Sociodemográfica" (INE, 1991). This supplies information on the occupational activity of individuals, together with other meaningful social and economic aspects, as are the educational training received, the place of residence and other relevant personal and family characteristics.
