Abstract:
The article is centred on the study of the number and weight of innovative industrial companies in the Basque Autonomous Community, Spain and in the European Union and of their evolution in the period 1994-98. The study also divulges the context in which innovation surveys emerge and the limitations or insufficiencies that such surveys currently present and the statistic sources available for the Basque Autonomous Community. The data are offered sorted out by size and sectors of activity, because these are two factors that condition the behaviours and results of companies. And within innovative companies, a distinction is made between those that have developed product innovations and those that have developed process innovations.
