Abstract:
In this work the author studies the evolution of total productivity of certain factors in the Basque Country (in the level of its provinces), comparing their behaviour with the average behaviour in Spain, for the 1970 - 1995 period. This time period is especially meaningful since the rules and regulations of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) have been in force as from March 1986 in various degrees, albeit with a variable transition period. The study concludes that total agricultural productivity in the Basque Country is growing at an annual mean rate that is slightly inferior to that of the average growth in Spain. It also concludes that in the Basque Country and in Spain the trend as from 1985 is similar in the sense that growth in productivity is decreasing. This is due, among other reasons, to the incidence of the adhesion to the EEC, although the drop in the case of the Basque Country is not as strong as in Spain as a whole. The divergence in terms of productivity is shown in a more pronounced manner when carrying out the analysis in the provincial level. This is the result of the existence of different productive structures.
