Abstract:
This article seeks to help explain the economic crisis in Japan which has now been ongoing for over ten years. Attention is centred on the effects of the growth of the speculative bubble in 1985-90 and the correction of the prices of shares and real estate assets which took place in the 1990´s. The case of Japan serves as a basis for reflection on three important matters: 1) the social and economic cost of speculative bubbles; 2) the consequences of partial modification of financial regulations; and 3) the current importance of financial markets.
