Abstract:
The major changes in banking regulations in European Union Member States in recent years have been made in an effort to liberalise the provision of banking services and increase competition in the sector. Given the trend towards integration in European banking, banks are forced to increase production efficiency in order to survive in the new environment. This work runs a comparative analysis of the efficiency of European banking systems, paying special attention to the position in terms of efficiency and productivity of the Spanish banking sector in the context of the European Union. To do this, it looks at research published in international literature on the comparative analysis of efficiency in banking, and in particular at recent works using the most up-to-date techniques.
