Abstract:
Over recent decades, economists have become increasingly interested in the management of fish stocks. This is due to increased pressure on stocks, largely as a result of post-war technological advances and the problems of delimiting international fishing rights, with the extension of fishing zones to 200 miles. Scientific advances in bio-economic fishing analyses have essentially centred on the institutional, biological and economic conditions involved in fishing. Recent publications on the subject address the question from two broad angles. One groups models the cross-border nature of fishing resources and its effects on their management, in terms both of stocks shared by different coastal states and of fishing grounds that extend into international waters. The second group looks at the uncertainty of fish management, and reflects the considerable interest aroused by the establishment of marine reserves and their repercussions on the balance of relevant variables.
