Abstract:
In Spain, there are no official estimates of macro-aggregates for regional areas smaller than the provinces (nuts III). These macro-aggregates are estimated by indirect methods based on econometric estimations developed for larger areas, such as Spanish nut II and nut III. However, these methods ignore that the characteristics of spatial data and phenomena may invalidate the results of the usual statistics and econometrics techniques, such as the ordinary least squares. In this article we address the spatial problems that indirect methods cope with, and we estimate the product of Spanish municipalities in 1991 applying spatial econometrics techniques.
