Abstract:
The Basque economy enjoyed a strong growth in industrial output in the nineties, as a result of the depreciation of Peseta between 1992 and 1995. That view is confirmed by the increase in the external trade surplus and the worsening of trade deficit with the rest of Spain, both happened in the last years of the Twentieth Century. Deep changes in the pattern of trade of the Basque Country reflect not only a shift towards economic activities with higher income elasticity but also a widening of intraindustrial trade. However, the basque industry still shows a structure where traditional and intermediate sectors are the main suppliers of income.
