Abstract:
The article analyses the development of the important productive network configured in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country by the automotive auxiliary industry. This industry emerges from an important industrial base in the field of transformed metals, taking advantage of the existing technological proximity with certain activities that the car manufacturers demand. The historical evolution of this auxiliary industry has been directly conditioned by two circumstances: progressive changes in the models of productive organisation in the automotive sector (that determine the relationships between suppliers and manufacturers) and the evolution of the normative framework that regulates the markets of that sector. This changing context will allow us to differentiate three stages in its evolution, up to when arriving to the current process of internationalisation and concentration that is experienced by this industry.
