Abstract: Based on the Amadeus data-base —up to now unexploited by the literature on internationalisation—, this article analyses the foreign investment of the Basque and Spanish firms: the number of investors and participated firms, their size, and in which countries are the investments done. This data base is used also, with some other traditional sources, to analyse the competitiveness of the economy (approached by the income per cápita and the productivity) and the competitiveness of the firms (approached by the economic profitability) in the Basque Country and Spain, against the four main countries recently integrated on the EU: the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and the Slovak Republic. The analysis of firm’ profitability and productivity is carried out both for the Basque and Spanish investors and for the firms in the four recently integrated countries where investment is done.
