Abstract: The paper applies the Benefit Transfer Method to estimate the economic cost of the Prestige oil spill in the Basque Country. This study is a useful application of the method to support decision making process in situations in which time and resources are limited. The effects of the oil spill at the Basque Coast, as well as the damage and losses litigation process against the classifier company were part of the limitations in this case. The application was very useful in this case, and can also be useful to illustrate the value of these methods. Nevertheless, it has to be taken into account the existence of more rigorous methods that should be applied once the urgency of the situation is overcame.
