Abstract: The article examines the development of evaluation through the Structural Fund policies since its introduction in 1988. The interest of the European Commission in the institutionalisation of evaluation in the European context and the establishment of homogenous evaluation practices in the starting point of the analysis, canalised through two complementary directions. Firstly, it is observed and increased relevance of evaluation in the Structural Funds programming while, in second place, it is analysed the intense job made towards the elaboration of a common methodological framework for the evaluation practice. After assessing the results and advances obtained, the paper ends up focusing on the future challenges of the evaluation practice, taking the next programming period 2007-2013 as the main reference.
