Abstract: This paper analyses in both descriptive and econometric terms the substitution of leaded fuel by unleaded in the European Union. Likewise, it is put special emphasis on the role of preferential tax treatment to unleaded gasoline complemented by the adjustment of the Member States to the ban of leaded gasoline in this process. With this purpose unleaded gasoline consumption is estimated by the vehicles stock and their rate of use derivative function. The results obtained from the panel data technique state the effectiveness of this community environmental policy.
