Abstract:
The transport sector has recently received a considerable attention in the context of compliance with greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets, as those set in the Kyoto Protocol. There is currently an intense debate on which measures are more effective and efficient to curb CO2 emissions in this sector. This article analyses the suitability of different CO2 emissions reductions instruments as applied in the transport sector, taking into account different criteria and focusing on passenger transport by road. The comparative advantages and drawbacks of different instruments are identified and their mutual interactions and best policy combinations analysed.
