Abstract: This paper analyses the Spanish responsibility for greenhouse gas emissions generated in 1995 and 2000 taking into account emissions embodied in exports and imports. For doing so, we have used a multirregional input-output model environmentally extended with air emissions. This model allows for applying both the producer and consumer responsibility concepts and the trade emission balance. The paper concludes that the Spanish responsibility from the “consumer” standpoint is bigger than the responsibility from the “producer” standpoint for all the six gases; that is, Spain is a “net exporter” of emissions. Regarding the evolution of the six greenhouse gases aggregated in CO2 equivalent units from 1995 to 2000, the emission increase is larger from the “consumer” than from the “producer” point of view.
