Abstract: In the past 20 years the retail sector has undergone a real internal revolution in terms of management, investment and innovation and in various fields of competence (sectoral, urban development-related, territorial, infrastructure-related). This internal revolution has led leading firms to the top of the general business ranking. The sector maintains a strong dynamic of change, and transformations even more far-reaching than those already undergone may be expected with the entry into force of the Service Directive in 2010. As a result the sector in the Basque Country and in Spain as a whole will be in a very different situation from that of recent years. The challenges to be faced are the speed of this radical transformation and the number and size of those firms which will respond to this crucial challenge to their survival.
