Abstract:
This article describes the trends in education and continuing training in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country (ACBC) over the past 25 years. It begins by charting trends in the Basque education system since Spain joined the European Community. It then examines the «standard» of education here, comparing results for skills acquired in the ACBC with results from the rest of Spain and from neighbouring countries. The education policy objectives of the Department of Education (the competent authority and the driver of the education model for the young people of the ACBC) are presented and results are analysed.Trends in continuing training in the ACBC are also examined and, finally, there is an exposition of the main challenges faced by our education system in striving to make the ACBC a benchmark region for education and continuing training.
