Abstract: The first part of this article highlights several traits from our recent history: a) a sectoral approach that fails to take into account the intrinsic thematic and institutional transversality of transport; b) a lack of rigour and transparency in the assessment and justification of investments; and c) the inevitable «entropy» of the system of «transport plus urban development», both at symptomatic level and as a catalyst of recent dynamics. Part two covers trends for the future: the great challenge of our demographics, the foreseeable impact of technology, the resurgence of the concept of the city and the increasingly central role of private initiative in the supply and management of the mobility of people. Finally, part three examines the need to rethink the transport system, which means seeing transport as a means and not an end in itself, adopting a systematic approach and emphasising the diversity of individual responses based largely on perceptions that qualify the objective parameters of the system.
