Abstract: The transformation in the energy sector over the past 30 years has been marked by two major lines: first, achieving a more efficient economic system in terms of energy use, and secondly a great effort to diversify the energy sector (evidenced first by the gasification of the country and, more recently, by the exploitation of renewable energy resources. This article provides objective data on the scale and significance of the energy transformation that has taken place with the incorporation of energy demand, supply and price indicators in regard to trends in the major economic macro-facts and figures. It also describes the main policies implemented, sets out and assesses their major milestones and, finally, reflects on the large-scale world-wide energy revolution which we are now facing, the challenges that it entails and the opportunities that it provides.
