La política ambiental vasca: pasado, presente y futuro

Abstract: This article analyses the trends in Basque environment policy in relation to the economic, social, institutional and environmental changes that have taken place in recent decades, and looks at the main challenges facing that policy. To that end, it begins by taking a look back at the main milestones of environment policy in the Basque Country from its inception in 1980 to the present day. It then goes on to review the way in which the policy is structured in terms of institutions, its operational features, issues of areas of authority (transverse and vertical) and its model of governance. Next, it analyses how effective environment policy has been in terms of meeting its defined objectives. Finally, the main trends and foreseeable problems are set out along with strategies for tackling them.
