Abstract:
The importance of eco-innovation in the current academic and political debate on sustainability is unquestionable. The term refers to improvements in the management of the environmental effects of production and consumption activities. This places it squarely at the heart of any sustainable development policy and strategy for transition to sustainability. This paper sets out to provide a review of the main theoretical lines used to analyse interaction between the economy, technology and the environment. We focus on those lines that have proved especially important in the empirical analysis of obstacles and stimuli on the road to eco-innovation. The intention is to determine what lessons can be learned from the different approaches for public and private-sector policies, and to present practical case studies involving the encouragement of eco-innovation.
