Viejos y nuevos institucionalismos bajo el prisma del individualismo institucional

Fernando Toboso

EKONOMIAZ. Revista vasca de Economía, 2011, vol. 77, issue 02, 86-125

Abstract: Must institutional analyses be built on the methodological rules of “methodological individualism” or on those of “methodological holism”, in their several varieties? A middle way mode of explanation exists which Aggasi firstly named it as “institutional individualism” in 1960. The arguments and citations contained here show that this mode of explanation is being used by researchers working upon different perspectives in institutional analysis. This does not necessarily mean that a kind of convergence is occurring. No statement in favor of such a convergence is made in the present article. The paper concludes that the three methodological rules that define «institutional individualism» allow for building analyses less extreme, and also more persuasive, than those traditionally made upon the rules of “methodological individualism» and «methodological holism”.
