Abstract: The economic crisis which we are currently suffering has highlighted the greater stability of financial services cooperatives (FSC) in juxtaposition to the fragility of the rest of the banking sector. This has resulted in a resurgence of the cooperative form not only due to the positive effects in the market dynamics but also due to the influence of FSC in the reduction of systemic risk. Based on this a repositioning of FSC in regulators’ agendas seems plausible and more than ever, requires knowledge of their reality. For this reason this work focuses on providing an update vision of financial cooperatives on the American continent which draws lower interest in the economic literature. The results show an important disparity among the different countries owing to the variety forms of institutionalization of FSCs in the financial systems.
