Abstract:
The aim of this article is determining how socio-economic inequalities affect educational trajectories and results in Spain. More specifically, we select two aspects: the risk of school failure and early school leaving. We analyze the effect of socio-economic background on both, taking into account they define, to a large extent, the possibilities of individuals in the area of education and training. In order to do so, two logistic regression models are estimated. In them, the diversity of means through which background inequalities work is highlighted. In the model applied to the risk of school failure, a series of school-level variables, additionally to the personal and family characteristic variables, are included. Aiming at providing a historical perspective to the effect of socio-economic inequalities on the educational results, the article also includes an analysis of the intergenerational transmission of educational qualifications. This analysis is applied to seven age groups of persons who were born between 1940 and 1975.
