Sanidad y dependencia. Atención sanitaria y servicios sociales: ¿una cuestión de integración o sólo de coordinación?

Abstract: This paper addresses the issue of how to go forward in the ground of healthcare coordination. For this purpose, we use data from the European Health Survey (2009) and analyze the consumption of 14 healthcare services according to age and dependency degree (measured using Barthel’s index). We observe show that healthcare consumption increases with age and level of dependency and that there exist complementarity relationships between health and social services for some groups. According to these results, we propose a bidirectional model of coordination-integration: healthcare coordination for population 75 years and older, and healthcare integration for severe or total dependent people. This model allows for constant information updating as well as re-assessment and following of patients.
