Abstract:
The article gives an overview on the pension system in Spain, analyzing both the public and the private system. Public reform processes from a global perspective are reviewed, which mainly are made from the standpoint of sustainability, to the detriment of adequacy and sufficiency. These two principles can be mitigated through the development of supplementary pension schemes, with an insufficient development in Spain, and some suggested ways for them to play the rightful role in social protection for which they are called are introduced and analyzed in a compared frame.
