EKONOMIAZ. Revista vasca de Economía, 2014, vol. 86, issue 02, 154-171

Abstract: Education helps to increase human capital, but its effect on factor endowments also depends on its quality. This paper analyzes the contribution of human capital to productivity growth in Spain during the period 2000-2013 taking into account the information on levels of skills and competencies of the Spanish adult population offered by PIAAC (Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies). The analysis uses growth accounting techniques and micro-individual data and focuses on the impact of knowledge and associated skills and not just on improvements in educational attainment. The results indicate the existence of substantial problems to convert the improving education levels of the population in equivalent gains of productivity.
