Abstract: The impact of the crisis on the Spanish labor market has been very intense compared with other European countries but also with respect to previous recession episodes. Overall, employment destruction account by around 18% of employment prior to the crisis and unemployment more than tripled its level in 2008. The impact of the crisis has been, though widespread, relatively heterogeneous, showing a steeper decline in employment for groups of workers such as the young and those with lower levels of qualification. Throughout this period, employment has shown a high cyclicality that would relate to the institutional characteristics of the labor market in Spain. In the future, the absorption of high unemployment will face the major challenge of adjusting the skills of the unemployed, with a very high proportion of workers with a reduced level of qualification and a very high incidence of long-term unemployed, to the requirements of labour demand.
