Abstract:
Initially, after showing the context in which similar initiatives arise in major advanced countries, the paper delimits the concept of Industry 4.0 and assesses its potential scope. It is then linked with the economic literature on General Purpose Technologies (GPT) that deals with major techno-economic changes or revolutions, and with the advance manufacturing initiative launched in the USA as well. Next section discusses the current situation, the expectations and the readiness of the Basque industry related to Industry 4.0, by means of the analytical framework developed within the project INBENZHAP. It is pointed how the challenge for Basque industry is not centered in technological issues, where its starting position is not bad, but rather lies in non-technological aspects, so that the combination of both would allow new ways to deliver value to the customers. Finally, the article ends with a summary of the main conclusions drawn from the previous analysis, accompanied with a set of recommendations for the development and transformation of the Basque economy towards the Industry 4.0.
