Abstract:
In the first part of the present article, insights are provided on what servitization stands for, why it is often misunderstood or overlooked, and why it is relevant for industrial actors to consider pursuing servitization strategies. It goes on to explain what advantages companies can reap from implementing servitization concepts and how it can allow them to differentiate from competition and achieve superior client loyalty. In the second part, outlooks for servitization practices are discussed amidst the rise of smart production and customer relationship management concepts, like Industrie 4.0. The article shows how a smartization of business processes and an intensified use of IT can form a catalyzer for the trend among industrial firms to servitize. The article finishes by passing in review three types of barriers that may prevent firms to smartizise (thereby lowering also their potential to draw benefits from servitization) and by issuing managerial and policy maker implications.
