Abstract:
Spanish data show that labor participation of the younger cohorts, women and men, has been converging through the last years and decreasing as expected. But, as age increases, this gender convergence always on course, to reach advanced ages, labor participation collapses. This is not the case in all countries, within the EU and beyond, where one finds notable exceptions to the Spanish rule. There are many reasons to keep being active at advanced ages, as well as for abandoning (labor) activity, but few of them bear any relationship with the continuous increase in life expectancy that is being observed everywhere since decades. This is a puzzle that begs for an explanation.
