Abstract: This paper analyses whether the adoption of information and communication technologies (ICT), and particularly e-commerce, has a direct effect on the extension and configuration of global production networks, taking into account the decisions of internationalization and internalization of Spanish manufacturing companies. For this purpose, the final market transactions through B2C e-commerce (business to customer) and intermediate transactions through B2B e-commerce (business to business) are considered. Our results confirm that, overall, B2C e-commerce favors the international activity of Spanish companies. On the other hand, B2B e-commerce promotes the geographical concentration of production. Findings allow us to confirm that the adoption of e-commerce contributes to the reconfiguration of global production networks, describing a dynamic process between digitization and internationalization.
