Abstract: Trade policy in developing countries is the central focus of this study. It has been inspired by the need to assess the adequacy of the recent experiences with trade policy reform in the developing world in the ligth of current trends in the world economy and the new policy dilemmas that developing countries must confront. This article seeks to pull together the strands of these different dimensions and to show how they interact. It first deals with th emerging conditions of the world trading system which serve as the parameters within which trade policy must operate. Then it addresses new conceptions in respect of trade policy issues. lastly it examines some recent empirical evidence on the relationship between trade policy and economic performance.// Este trabajo examina las nuevas reformas comerciales de los países en desarrollo a la luz de las tendencias en la economía internacional. Desde esa perpectiva se puntualizan los nuevos dilemas que enfrentan los países en desarrollo, y en particular los de la América Latina. En primer lugar se describen las nuevas condiciones imperantes en el sistema de comercio internacional que sirven de parámetros para las políticas comerciales. En segundo lugar se analizan las nuevas teorías de política comercial y sus lecciones. Por último, se examina la evidencia empírica disponible acerca de la relación entre política comercial y desempeño económico
