El gasto en cuidados médicos de las familias uruguayas

Abstract: During the last decade changes have taken place in the structure of the expenditure of the Uruguayan households. In particular, the expenditure in health care raised and diversified. Using data from income and expenditure survey (Encuesta de Gastos e Ingresos 1994-1995, Instituto Nacional de Estadística), we estimated Engel curves for different goods and services related to health care. We found that health care is necessary (income elasticity positive and smaller than one ) except for medicament and dental care (it is not possible to reject the hypothesis that they are luxury goods). When considering all the expenditure in health care, it is proven that it is a necessary good but the income elasticity is near to one. Nevertheless, is a necessary good for the richest, but is not possible to reject that it is a luxury good for the poorest.// En el pasado decenio se produjeron cambios en la estructura del gasto de lo hogares uruguayos. En particular, los gastos en cuidados médicos han aumentado y diversificado. A partir de la información contenida en las Encuestas de Gastos e Ingresos de los Hogares del Instituto Nacional de Estadística, 1994-1995, se estiman curvas de Engel para distintos bienes y servicios relativos a cuidados médicos. Las estimaciones se realizaron mediante técnicas paramétricas controlando por el sesgo de selección muestral. Se encuentra que los cuidados médicos son necesarios (elasticidad ingreso positiva y menor que uno) con excepción de los medicamentos y los servicios odontológicos, para los que no es posible rechazar la hipótesis de que se trata de un bien necesario, aunque la elasticidad ingreso es muy cercana a la unidad. No obstante, al realizar las estimaciones por estratos de ingreso se verifica que sólo para los estratos de mayores ingresos es posible rechazar la hipótesis de que constituyan bienes de lujo.
