Abstract:
This work aims to analyze the evolution of Mexican electricity emissions and their determinants during 2001-2019. The method of decomposition of emissions is the logarithmic mean Divisia index (IDML); it considers five effects or determinants. The results show an increase in emissions due to the activity, electricity intensity, and trade balance effects, while the generation efficiency and fuel mix effects contributed to a reduction that was insufficient to offset the increase of the remaining factors. The study concludes that the energy policies adopted based on sustainability as a development option have not resulted in a reduction of emissions from electricity generation in Mexico. It concludes by proposing a series of measures to establish a national agenda for electric energy sustainability in Mexico.
