Abstract: This paper aims to analyze the different meaning of location in the spatial models of the Theory of Industrial Organization (TIO). The idea behind this objective is to highlight two critical aspects of product differentiation strategy. The first aspect is that the present organizational transition undergone by flexible firms has changed the location patterns of manufacturing in many countries. The second is that, because of this change, the spatial models of product differentiation fail to explain the competitive strategies of firms applying flexible technologies.
