Innovation & Management Review, 2026, vol. 23, 218-235

Abstract: PurposeGiven that fake news and disinformation constitute a public problem in which the State plays a central role, this study discusses the potential applications and limitations of blockchain technology in combating disinformation. The objective is to investigate the potential use of blockchain technology in addressing fake news and disinformation, with particular emphasis on its implications for public policy.Design/methodology/approachAn integrative literature review was conducted to examine the potential applications of blockchain technology, bridging theoretical discussions from the fields of public policy, fake news and disinformation. The review culminates in the development of a practical framework. As with any literature review, some relevant publications may not have been captured; future research should therefore explore additional technological dimensions and include a broader range of sources, particularly from the grey literature.FindingsThe theoretical categories of disinformation were associated with the identified layers of blockchain application, resulting in a framework that organizes different approaches to combating disinformation through blockchain technology. In terms of practical implications, the study identifies gaps in governmental technological capacities required for network processing, as well as in organizational capabilities necessary for blockchain implementation.Originality/valueThe findings contribute to the accumulation of knowledge regarding the use of blockchain technology in public administration and strategies to combat fake news and disinformation. The proposed framework advances the debate on the use of emerging technologies by the State and provides a systematic basis for designing public policies aimed at combating disinformation through blockchain technology.
