Abstract: Purpose In recent years, the metropolis of Shiraz in Iran is increasingly facing an increase in population due to unforeseen migration, which, while reducing job opportunities, has greatly upset the urban balance in the field of sustainability. The main issue in this research is to improve environmental conditions; economic and cultural in Shiraz, and urban management using entrepreneurship for sustainability in social contexts. The purpose of this study is to design a framework of urban entrepreneurship functions for the sustainability of environmental causes in Shiraz.Design/methodology/approach This research is developmental in terms of results because the functions of urban entrepreneurship based on the environmental sustainability causes in urban social contexts do not have the necessary theoretical integration, and this research can be effective in creating scientific and functional integration in terms of entrepreneurship sustainability in Shiraz. In terms of data collection, this research is a mixed method, because in the qualitative section, according to the use of content analysis, 12 experts and experts in urban affairs and entrepreneurship have been interviewed at the university level. In the quantitative part, 30 managers related to the field of urban management in Shiraz were asked to participate in evaluating the identified themes. In terms of the analysis process, it should also be stated, first, in the qualitative section, the themes are identified during the theme analysis method based on the interview. In a quantitative part, based on the process of interpretive ranking process (IRP) as one of the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods to determine the most effective content in the social context of Shiraz.Findings The results showed that the effectiveness percentage of environmental knowledge explication is higher than other urban entrepreneurship functions based on the sustainability of environmental causes, which means that for the sustainable development of urban entrepreneurship in Shiraz, the use of explicit environmental knowledge and promotion the level of social awareness is the most important function which should contribute to the development of environmental norms in entrepreneurship through social media.Originality/value This research is one of the few researches in the field of urban entrepreneurship functions to develop the sustainability of environmental causes in the social contexts of Shiraz. Because previous research models have presented social entrepreneurship models in the form of theoretical frameworks, this research has tried to create a model through content analysis and through comparative matrices, to evaluate. The originality of this study is, firstly, the identification of the urban entrepreneurship functions factors to develop environmental sustainability, and secondly, the study follows the IRP of the factors identified in the social contexts of Shiraz. Both implications raised in this section show the knowledge-enhancing and practical capacities of the study.
