Abstract:
PurposeThis paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the existing literature on LGBT tourism, highlighting the current landscape, key themes and gaps within this field. Using the theory, context, characteristics and methodology (TCCM) framework to conduct a systematic literature review, this study found most of the research on LGBT tourism is geographically concentrated in the USA, South Africa and Australia. Key travel motivations for LGBT tourists include a temporary escape from social prejudice, the construction of sexual identity, the pursuit of social freedom, escaping heteronormativity and seeking sex and romance. The findings of this study highlight the distinctiveness of LGBT tourism as a segment within the broader tourism industry. This study underscores the importance of recognising LGBT tourism as a unique market segment with specific needs and preferences. Tourism marketers, destination managers and policymakers can use these insights to develop targeted strategies and policies that cater to the diverse motivations of LGBT travellers, enhancing destination inclusivity and competitiveness.
