Integration of Digital Technologies in Implant Dentistry: Workflow, Challenges, and Opportunities

Abstract:
The advent of digital technologies has revolutionized implant dentistry, offering enhanced precision, efficiency, and patient-centered outcomes compared to conventional workflows. This comprehensive review explores the integration of digital tools across the implantology spectrum, from diagnosis and treatment planning to surgical execution and prosthetic rehabilitation. Digital imaging modalities, such as cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), intraoral scanning, and facial scanning, enable accurate virtual planning and patient-specific simulations. Computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), combined with three-dimensional (3D) printing, has streamlined the fabrication of surgical guides and definitive restorations. In contrast, guided implant surgery improved predictability and reduced the operative risk. This review further examines the clinical applications of fully digital versus hybrid workflows, highlights their advantages and limitations, and discusses emerging innovations, including artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and bioprinting. Current evidence highlights the potential of digital workflows to enhance accuracy, reduce treatment time, and improve patient satisfaction; however, challenges such as high costs, steep learning curves, and the need for standardized protocols persist. Future perspectives point toward the wider adoption of digital implantology supported by robust clinical trials, cost-effectiveness analyses, and continuous clinician training.
