Abstract:
The availability of resistance and power data as a function of speed is a critical factor for both new ship hull designs and existing vessels. This data significantly influences the development of the ship design process, as well as key operational aspects such as fuel consumption, economic performance, and environmental impact. Computer software based on regression models offers a fast and reliable approach to estimating the resistance and power of conventional hull forms. Such tools are particularly useful during the preliminary design stages and for vessels already in operation for which empirical data may not be available. This article presents a methodology for using the computer program “Ship Power”, a computational tool developed by the author, to predict ship resistance and power. Two case studies are considered, presenting the results of resistance calculations based on the “Ship Power” computer program, for an existing Albanian fishing vessel and the conceptual design of a new fishing vessel hull.
