Cyprus. The unfinished absurdity

Abstract: The real Cyprus problem has to do with the centuries-old issue of relations between Greeks and Turks. As such, Cyprus lies at the heart of political developments in Greece. The Cyprus issue, nonetheless, may be misunderstood if the personality of Archbishop Makarios III is not seriously taken into consideration. As a matter of fact, the imbroglio that up to now still exists in the Ankara-Athens relationship may be regarded as his personal achievement. Had not Makarios ruled Cyprus, the Cypriots, both Greek and Turkish, would have long ago sunk into prosperity and would, therefore, be forgotten by world public opinion. And last but not least: the subsequent unavoidable separation of the Island into two different statehoods is due to Makarios' policy and the support that Greek-Cypriots wholeheartedly gave to him.
