Las aportaciones culturales de los Chicanos a los espacios que habitan en Estados Unidos

María Ileana García Gossio

Entelequia. Revista Interdisciplinar, 2008, issue 6, 63-72

Abstract: It is customary in the US for the WASP Notion (White Anglo Sax and Protestant) to be bound to the principles and ideals of what the North American nation shall be; Nevertheless, WASP Nation manifestations aren't the sole expression, for indigenous/native nations, such as those from Mexico, Africa, Asia, etc., will be found there as well. Several times, upon such multicultural scene in the country, and in the absence of inter-culture public policy, the aforementioned groups have belligerently reacted to opposition and assimilation attempts which were aimed to their cultural behavior. One instance of such counter-culture reaction is the Chicanos, as opposed to the generic notion of Hispanics. Chicanos have recovered, from the very social set they are immersed in, inhabitation-enabling elements for their urban environment, by means of factors which supply for cultural identity, hence citizenship awareness. Attention is brought to "Barrio Logan", a mostly Mexican-populated working class neighborhood in San Diego, CA. in the US: Cultural expressions in the Barrio's own urban environment have provided specific contributions to its Culture identity (which his neither Mexican nor WASP, but something distinct: Chicano) inside the United States, by retrieving Mexican items into activities like public park design, as well as in houses, restaurants, churches, mercados (flea-markets), etc.
