Antimicrobial Resistance among Gram-Negative Bacteria Isolated From Urinary Tract Infection in Adult Females

Abstract:
Background Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health concern, and detection of antimicrobial resistance is required to reduce empirical antimicrobial treatment. This study aimed to screen the AMR among adult females suffering from UTIs. Materials and methods This was a cross-sectional study done in Khartoum state at Bashair Teaching Hospital in 2020. A total of 159 bacterial isolates from adult females (suffering from UTIs) aged>18 were included; patients with a one-week history of antibiotics were excluded from the study, midstream urine samples were collected, and semi-quantitative urine culture was done; identification of isolates was performed with standard microbiological techniques, agar diffusion methods (Kirby Baur technique) was used for susceptibility, and data were analyzed by SPSS version19. Results Of 159 UTI patients, 15 (9.4%) were pregnant, and 144 (90.6%) were nonpregnant; most of them belonged to the age group 36 – 55 years 62 (39%). Furthermore, the most common organism isolated was E.coli 83(52.2%), K. pneumonaiae, 43(27%), P. aeruginosa24(15.1%), Citrobacter species5(3.2%), enterobacteria4(2.5%). The resistance pattern was higher in Ampicillin, which is 99.4, while the most sensitive antibiotic was in Gentamicin. Bacterial isolates are significantly correlated to age, which is higher in ages 36-75 than in ages 18-35 (p.value 0.0002).
