Characterization and Analysis of Polyethylene and Polypropylene Microplastic from Packed Food

Abstract:
Microplastics are generated as a result of partial degradation of plastic materials which has been continuously used and disposed in the terrestrial and aquatic environment. Produced microplastic present in marine and terrestrial ecosystem is now entering in to the food chain. Many packed food containers are made up plastic like Low density Polyethylene, High Density Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Polystyrene etc. Current study is focused on designing methodology for extraction of microplastics from food sample, identification and characterization of extracted microplastic by using FTIR analytical technique. After Microplastic identification, complete degradation of microplastic by plastic degrading bacterial isolates were analyzed. Nacl and Ethanol were used for extraction of microplastic from food sample. Bioremediation approach showed efficient degradation of LDPE and Polypropylene microplastic.
