Abstract:
India is recognized as a natural repository of medicinal plants and is often referred to as a global herbarium. Research on medicinal plants has emerged as a prominent field worldwide; however, systematic evaluation of their safety, efficacy, and pharmacological activities remains a critical necessity. Medicinal plants serve as valuable sources of bioactive compounds with significant therapeutic potential, contributing to disease management, pain relief, and health promotion. Their use as raw materials for drug development is steadily increasing, particularly in addressing challenges such as microbial drug resistance. Traditional medicines, largely derived from plants, continue to serve as primary healthcare resources in developing nations. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that nearly 80% of the population in most Asian countries depends predominantly on traditional medicine for primary healthcare needs. Phytochemical investigations of Cassia tora leaves and pods have revealed the presence of numerous bioactive compounds, including alkaloids, anthraquinones, cardenolides, leucoanthocyanins, phenolics (catechol, naphthol, and pyrogallol), flavonoids, flavononols, and steroids. The present paper focuses on the pharmacognostic aspects of Cassia tora Linn. as documented in Unani and ethnobotanical literature. It consolidates available scientific information on C. tora , a widely distributed medicinal plant in India and other tropical regions, with special emphasis on its ethnomedicinal applications and pharmacological relevance.
